Sightseeing of Burgos, Spain

Burgos has a perfectly conserved old center of town , and reminds to important personalities of Spanish medieval history come alive, as to the national hero "El Cid" , who was born here. The town's major attractions are the following:

Cathedral (photo - left)
(open daily 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.)
The 13th century gothic building is among the most admired of its kind worldwide. Specially remarkable are its portal, the "Puerta del Sarmental", considered the best example of gothic sculpture of its century and the Cloister. The 15th century chapel, "Capilla del Condestable", is another work of unique architectonic value.
 

La Casa del Cordón
This palace is an outstanding example of civil-architecture in Burgos. Specially remarkable is the portal.

14th century gothic church with "Mudéjar"-portal

Monasterio de las Huelgas

(open daily except Mondays 10 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. and 4 to 5.15 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m. to 1.15 p.m.)
This monastery, with its gothic chapterhouse of unique value and its Romanesque cloister, is considered one of the most important monuments in Spain. It was founded 1187 by Alfonso VIII, whose tomb alongside the ones of other members of Spanish royal family can be visited inside.


Iglesia de San Esteban
13th century gothic church. Close to it there is the "Arco de San Esteban", a 12th century Arabian arc.                                       The statue of El Cid


Iglesia de San Gil
14th century gothic church. In its interior there are the chapels of "Los Castros" and "Los Encinas", with tombs of high artistic value.

Iglesia de San Lesmes
Gothic church, built during 14th, 15th and 16th century. Contains the tomb of the town's patron.

Iglesia de San Nicolas

This church is specially remarkable for its 16th century gothic-renaissance altar, work of San Francisco de Colonia.

Cartuja de Miraflores
(open daily 10.15 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
This 15th century church is specially important for the tombs of Juan II and Doña Maria in its interior.

Puerta de Santa Maria
A 16th century door of the town, with a 14th century arabian-style tower, "Torre de Santa Maria" at its side.

Archaeological Museum
(open workdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4.45 to 7.15 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Sundays closed)
Worth visiting are also the old city-walls, which are well-conserved at Puerta de San Esteban and Paseo de los Cubos.
