St Sebaldus's Church (photo - left)
To the west of the Town Hall in Nuremberg is St Sebaldus's Church (1225-73; Protestant), with a magnificent Gothic east choir (1379). On the outside of the choir is the Schreyer-Landauer tomb, a masterpiece by Adam Krafft (1492). Inside the church, on a pillar in the north aisle, can be seen the "Madonna in an Aureole" (1420-25). In the east choir is the famous tomb of St Sebaldus (1508-19), a masterpiece of the bronze-founder's art by Peter Vischer and his sons (silver sarcophagus of 1397 containing the saint's remains; on the east end Peter Vischer with his leather apron and chisel). Behind the tomb is a moving Crucifixion group by Veit Stoss (1507 and 1520). There is also an organ with 6,000 pipes.

National Germanic Museum
On the south side of the old town of Nuremberg, at Kornmarkt 1, is the National Germanic Museum (Germanisches Nationalmuseum), partly housed in a former monastery, with a rich collection covering all aspects of German art and culture and a large library. The same building houses the Industrial Museum (Gewerbemuseum), installed here in 1989.
The museum has approximately 1.2 million items relating to the artistic and cultural history of the region.
It was devastated by bombing attacks during the Second World War but the collections were kept in storage and were returned when the museum reopened in 1947.
Rebuilding was completed in 1977. A new extension was begun in 1987 and opened to the public in June 1993.

Church of Our Lady (photo - right)
On the east side of the square in Nuremberg is the Gothic Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady, 1352-61; R.C.). Above the porch with its rich sculptural decoration is the "Männleinlaufen," an old clock with mechanical figures (the seven Electors pacing round the Emperor Charles IV - a reference to the promulgation of the Golden Bull in 1356; performances daily at noon). Notable features of the interior are the Tucher Altar (c. 1440) and two handsome monuments by Adam Krafft.

St Lawrence's Church
In Lorenzer Platz in Nuremberg stands the twin-towered Gothic church of St Lawrence (St-Lorenzkirche; 13th-15th c.; Protestant), the city's largest church. Above the beautiful west doorway (c. 1355) is a rose window 9m/30ft in diameter. Outstanding among the many works of art it contains are the "Annunciation" by Veit Stoss (1517-18) which hangs in the choir, the tabernacle by Adam Krafft (1493-96), the crucifix by Veit Stoss on the high altar, the Krell Altar (behind the high altar; c. 1480), with the oldest surviving representation of the town, and the superb stained glass (1477-93) in the choir.

Town Walls
Nürnberg has preserved most of its circuit of walls (14th-15th c., strengthened in 16th-17th c.), with their numerous gates and towers.
The finest stretch of walls is on the west side of the town, between the massive Spittlertor and the former Maxtor. The best view of the walls, the old town and the Burg is from the Fürther Tor.

Transport Museum
Immediately south of the National Germanic Museum in Nuremberg, outside the old town walls (entrance in Lessingstrasse), is the Transport Museum (Verkehrsmuseum; railroads, postal services).
It contains a display on the history of railroads with a large collection of scale models as well as a variety of interactive games and experiments.

Burg
To the north of the old town of Nuremberg rises the Burg (alt. 351m/1,152ft; 220m/240yds long, 50m/165ft across). All legitimate German kings and emperors from 1050 to 1571 resided in the castle, and many imperial diets were held here. At the lower end are the old imperial stables (Kaiserstallung), built in 1495 as a granary and now occupied by a youth hostel. Immediately west of this is the Pentagonal Tower, the oldest building in the town (c. 1040), a relic of an earlier castle on the site. Higher up is the Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), built in the 11th century and much altered in later centuries, with the Sinwell Tower (panoramic views) and the "Deep Well." The castle (conducted visit) has a number of fine rooms, including the 12th century chapel, and contains some notable works of art.
