Main
Square
The perfectly preserved Telc Main Square ( namesti Zachariase z Hradce) is
a delightful place to spend an afternoon just soaking up the sights and
sounds. The square is located in the historical center of Telc which is
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many cafés and the
colonnaded walkways are a cool escape from the summer sun. The Renaissance
and Baroque buildings surrounding the Main Square have an interesting
history. Be sure to check out House number 61. It was bought by the Telc
baker in 1532 and decorated in graffiti representing the figures of Old
Testament commanders.
House number 15, also on the namesti Zachariase z Hradce stands out for
its façade that depicts scenes of the Cruxifixion, Saul and David,
Christopher, along with Faith and Justice. It almost appears as though the
artist was using the house as a massive canvas.
The large column at the center of the square is the Marian Column (Mariansky
sloup). Created by the sculptor Lipart in the early 18th Century, the
column is very ornate and represents elements of the Plague. The large
fountain in the main square is of St Margaret. It was originally done in
wood and in 1827 Lipart replaced it with the present work.
Further down the square and across from the castle is the medieval Church
of St James (Kostel sv Jakuba). For a grand overview of the entire square
and the city of Telc itself, be sure to visit the Church of the Holy
Spirit (Kostel sv Ducha) and climb the tower.
Telc
Chateau
Dominating the main square of Telc, the Chateau is hard to miss.
Originally a 14th Century Gothic castle, the Telc Chateau was
substantially altered in the second half of the 16th Century. The
alterations included changing the appearance of the chateau to that of the
Renaissance style along with the addition of the All Saints Chapel and the
park.
The chateau boasts a stunning interior highlighted by sgraffiti from the
16th Century. Also of note are the wooden waffle floors. An extensive
collection of 17th Century weaponry is on display as is a collection of
hunting and safari trophies.
Also in the Telc Chateau is an interesting display of the work by Czech
painter Jan Zrzavy (1890 - 1977) His specialties were surrealist works and
landscapes. Some of the pictures are actually quite bizarre, however, art
is in the eye of the beholder. Two tours of varying length and content are
available for visitors.
